The Weiße Stadt (White City)
In 1931, shortly before WWII, the housing estate was constructed south of the old village green between Aroser Allee, Emmentaler Straße and Genfer Straße.
Architects Otto Rudolf Salvisberg, Bruno Ahrend and Wilhelm Büning built the estate within three years. The estate got its name because of the whitewashed house fronts. The houses were designed in the „New Sobriety“ style and stand out because of their experimental construction.
The only specification was to build as much as possible in terraces and only multi-storey, all equipped with bathroom, toilet, balcony and central heating. Most of the houses and apartments currently belong to the Deutsche Wohnen Group and to GSW. The generous green spaces, designed by Berlin’s Director of Parks and Gardens Ludwig Lesser, are worth noting.
The estate’s infrastructure, with its own central heating plant, collective laundry facilities, kindergarten, schools, a doctor’s surgery and small shops, is also noteworthy.
